In the context of intensified United States–China great power competition under Presidents Donald Trump and Joseph Biden, U.S. strategic thinking about Taiwan has evolved. While still expresses concern for peace stability across Strait, it more recently come to covet as a asset. As such perceives Taiwan’s continued separation from Chinese mainland be in national interests. The enhancement existing economic, political, security interests regards “rediscovery” intrinsic military value have combined drive evolution thinking. Concurrently policies behaviors both Beijing Taipei served complement facilitate this evolution. new thinking, even if is incomplete limits, means that perspectives on become much incompatible, trust U.S.’ long-term intentions all but evaporated.
